A Blast From the Past

by Steve Cox

A book donated by the University of Chattanooga Class of 1941 to the University was discovered by a Georgia book dealer, who has kindly returned the gift to the Lupton Library.   Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, by James Agee and Walker Evans, published by the Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, may not be a rare or valuable book, but it holds historic significance for the University.  A book plate reads:  “Presented to University of Chattanooga Library by the Class of 1941.” Continue reading »

Where are the Magazines?

by Mike Bell

2ndfloor 2ndfloor1

Welcome back. Returning students will note some changes in the Library, especially on the second floor.  We have removed the shelving from the middle of the floor where current periodical issues were shelved and done some rearranging of second floor seating. Continue reading »

We Want to Hear From You!

The Library is testing a new way for you to ask us questions, submit ideas, pose a problem or give us praise.  On the side of every library webpage you should see a tab that says “Feedback”. Click on it, and a pop-up will let you tell us what you’re thinking. We’ll respond as quickly as possible, and you’ll get an email when we do. So let us know anything you’re thinking…tell us books we should be buying, what you think of our new hours, improvements we could make, or just ask us questions!

We’re here to help!

2009 Library Survey

by Sarla Murgai

459 students and 90 faculty and staff responded to the 2009 Library Survey.  A great majority of the UTC community indicate that they are highly satisfied with the Reference, Circulation, Reserve, Inter Library Loan, Instruction, Online Reference Sources, Indexes, databases, Availability of Laptop and Desktop Computers, and printing services.

A majority of our library patrons prefer desktop computers over laptop computers. They prefer to ask a reference question in person compared to email or IM or phone. They would like a quiet space to do some serious study and research.  Also, one of the suggestions in light of budget cuts was to close the library on Saturdays.

Kindles & Flips & Zooms, Oh My!

This year the Lupton Library is experimenting with a few new tech gadgets for students to check out and use. The most exciting of these may be the 3 Kindles, the ebook reader from Amazon. We’ve got 2 of the Kindle version 2 (smaller) and 1 of the Kindle DX available for checkout, preloaded with over 150 classics of literature, from Shakespeare to Jane Austen.  We also purchased 4 Flip video cameras, 4 Canon digital cameras and 2 Zoom H2 audio recorders.

All of the above tech gadgets for 3 days except for the Kindles which check-out for 7 days.

It Just Got a Little Easier

Libraries across UT System streamline direct borrowing.

Students, faculty, and staff at University of Tennessee campuses across the state will find it easier to borrow library materials when visiting sister campuses.   No special borrower’s card required! Now, the ID card issued by the library user’s home institution is sufficient to borrow library materials at any campus in the UT System. Continue reading »
